Shorts + Bags
The latest Sewing Initiative at The Sewing Hui has been creating shorts and bags for Maui's unsheltered families and individuals!
The Sewing Hui is collaborating with Maui Rapid Response to realize this project. Maui Rapid Response is a group of nonprofits that supports frontline services and supplies for Maui's unsheltered families and individuals. They began collaborating one month after the pandemic began. Maui Rapid Response consists of Chilis on Wheels-Maui, Maui Rescue Mission, and Mālama I Ke Ola Health Center and more. The shorts will be distributed at the Maui Rescue Mission weekly shower, laundry, and health services in Lāhainā, Kīhei, and Kahului, as well as by Chilis On Wheels-Maui’s Street Outreach volunteers in Kahului and Kīhei.
Maui Rapid Response received a large donation of men’s pants from Tommy Hilfiger in early March. The shelters however were seeking out shorts due to the heat. Maui Rapid Response approached The Sewing Hui to collaborate and to help create shorts for Maui’s unsheltered community. Our Volunteer Sally Daniels came up with the wonderful idea of turning the bottom of the pants into bags to give to these folks as well. So far we have already created 40 shorts and 75 bags, and our volunteers are continuing to create even more shorts and bags!
