Sewing Sewcials

Our SEWING SEWCIAL events: “Reuse, Rewear, Relove - Mending & Clothing Repair Sewcials” are held monthly. These gatherings, supported by the Maui County Recycling Department, are a key part of The Sewing Hui’s desire to promote sustainability through hands-on, community-driven activities.

Sewing Sewcials focus on mending, altering, restyling, and repurposing clothing to keep textiles out of the landfill. Each session is a space to work on your garment projects while connecting with others doing the same.

We ask that all attendees have basic sewing experience and can operate a sewing machine independently. Jennifer will be available to offer guidance and support, but there isn’t capacity to teach beginners. If you’re new to sewing, we kindly ask that you first attend our Beginner Sewing Workshop before signing up for a Sewcial.

Each Sewcial includes our Teddy Bear Project. We stuff large, pre-made teddy bears with clean, worn-out textiles to keep scraps out of the landfill. Each finished bear is donated to a keiki-centered organization, and a second unstuffed bear is given to students for a hands-on lesson in sustainability.

The purpose of the program is to keep textile waste out of the landfill. After each sewcial, we will weigh the clothing and keep track of how much we have been able to save. From August 2024 to June 2025, we diverted nearly 2,000 pounds of textile waste from Maui landfills!

YOUR KULEANA

To participate, there are two things for you to do:

  1. Volunteer with The Sewing Hui 30 days prior to the event. This helps keep the events focused on service. You can volunteer in the studio or at home.

  2. Bring worn out textiles to use as stuffing for our Teddy Bear Project.

Space is limited per session. To register you need to email us and then we will send you the sign up link, if there is space available in the session. You can email us at thesewinghui@gmail.com. This event is open to anyone - so please tell your friends, spread the word. Let's keep clothing out of the landfill!
